There’s something magical about road trips—the promise of adventure, the allure of uncharted territories, and the sheer joy of the journey itself. Our road trip was no different. The plan? A pilgrimage to six Jyotirlingas across three states: Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. This journey intertwines spirituality, culture, and camaraderie, making it a memorable experience.
Day 1: The Journey Begins in Hyderabad Hyderabad, the City of Pearls, served as the perfect starting point for this spiritual sojourn. We set off late at night to bypass city traffic and revel in the cool night breeze as we hit the open highway. The car was packed with essentials, enthusiasm, and a hearty dinner of Hyderabadi delicacies, fuelling both body and soul for the adventure ahead.
Hyderabad to Ujjain
The route was ambitious—1,048 kilometers of asphalt leading us to Ujjain. Our chosen path, via NH 44 and NH 47, promised smooth roads and scenic beauty, cutting through cities Nagpur, the Orange City, and into the heart of Madhya Pradesh.
As dawn broke, we rolled into Nagpur, the Orange City. The streets were quiet, except for the bustling aroma of freshly brewed chai and poha stalls. A satisfying breakfast here was just the energy boost we needed to continue.
Crossing into Madhya Pradesh, the landscape transformed. Rolling green fields, small villages, and the occasional roadside temple gave us glimpses of rural India’s charm. The simplicity and serenity of these settings were refreshing, offering a stark contrast to urban chaos.
After nearly 17 hours on the road, the ancient city of Ujjain unfolded before us with its timeless charm. Known as one of the seven sacred cities in Hinduism, Ujjain exudes spirituality at every corner. We checked into a hotel to freshen up, eager to begin our exploration.
Our first stop was the revered Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The temple’s spiritual energy was palpable, and its intricate architecture left us awestruck. Thanks to protocol assistance, we experienced a seamless darshan of Lord Shiva, a moment of profound peace and connection. The aura inside the temple was electrifying, the chants echoing like whispers from eternity.

Next, we visited the Kal Bhairav Temple, famed for its unique tradition of offering liquor to the deity. The vibrant ambiance of devotion and tradition was truly captivating.

We ended the day with a hearty dinner featuring local Ujjain specialties and retired to our beds, eager for the early morning Bhasma Aarti.
Day 2: The Bhasma Aarti and Beyond The pre-dawn hours in Ujjain are magical, especially during the Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar Temple. This unique ritual, where sacred ash is offered to Lord Shiva, left us spellbound with its significance and energy. The air was heavy with devotion as ash was offered to the deity, symbolizing the cycle of life and death.
Post a quick breakfast, we set out for Omkareshwar, our second Jyotirlinga destination. The road stretched before us like an open invitation to uncover more wonders, each kilometer bringing us closer to another spiritual milestone. From the bustling cityscapes to the tranquil temple towns, every moment became a story worth telling.
